The CMP is a federally chartered 501(c)(3) corporation that promotes responsible firearm and airgun use through training, safety, and competitions.
The CMP also has a youth focus, offering camps, clinics, scholarships, and other opportunities to improve marksmanship skills.
The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) sponsors and manages the championship in collaboration with the JROTC Commands of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force.
The championship features marksmen from all service branches in two classes: Sporter and Precision. Sporter competitors wear street clothes and use equipment that's better suited for beginners. Precision competitors wear a specialized uniform and use an Olympic-style air rifle.
The competition uses 10-meter ranges and compressed air or CO2-powered air rifles that shoot 4.5 mm (.177 caliber) soft lead pellets. Competitors use three firing positions: prone, standing, and kneeling.
Each summer, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) sponsors a popular Junior Rifle Camps and Clinics series to teach intermediate and advanced rifle marksmanship skills to junior shooters and their adult leaders. Camps are open to any entrants. All camps are one week long, except for the Outreach Clinics and the Advanced Standing Camps. CMP offers camps for both Smallbore and Air Rifle.
