The NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course is a minimum of 14 hours long and teaches the skills, knowledge, and attitude needed to safely use a rifle for target shooting. The course includes classroom instruction and hands-on range time. Topics covered in the course include:
Firearm safety: The NRA's curriculum is the national standard for firearm safety training.
Ammunition: How ammunition functions and the parts and function of different types of rifles
Rifle parts and operation: How to operate and understand the parts of a rifle
Shooting fundamentals: The actions that are repeated each time a shot is fired in any shooting position
Shooting positions: How to shoot from the benchrest, prone, sitting, standing, and kneeling positions
Cleaning: How to clean a rifle
The AR-15 Fundamentals course is designed to introduce responsible gun owners to the safe handling, proper maintenance and effective use of AR-15-style rifles and to bring awareness to the usefulness of this platform in the context of civilian home defense and defense of life.
