South Carolina Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP) vs. SC Constitutional Carry

Why Formal Training is Still Relevant?

South Carolina's Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP) training course must be at least eight hours long and approved by the state. The course covers:

  • South Carolina laws and case law related to handguns and deadly force

  • Safe gun handling skills

  • Firearms safety, operation, and marksmanship fundamentals

  • Applicable laws, civil responsibilities, and liability

  • Proper firearms storage practices

  • Prohibited carry locations

If you break any of the laws limiting concealed carry, either under Constitutional Carry or CWP, you can be charged with a misdemeanor with a maximum fine of $1,000 or one year in prison. A second offense is punishable by a maximum prison sentence of three years, while a third offense is punishable by a maximum sentence of five years.

That second strike is also the red line for losing your gun rights, at least temporarily.

North Carolina Concealed Carry Handgun (CCH)

The firearms training course must include eight hours of instruction, which can be broken up into smaller increments. It must also include a 40-round shooting qualification, where students must score at least 70% (28 out of 40) on a B-27 human silhouette target.
